Who we Are

The Salesians of Don Bosco, officially named the Society of St. Francis de Sales is a Roman Catholic Latin Rite religious institute founded in the late nineteenth century by Italian priest Saint John Bosco to help poor children during the Industrial Revolution.

The Salesians’ charter describes the society’s mission as “the Christian perfection of its associates obtained by the exercise of spiritual and corporal works of charity towards the young, especially the poor, and the education of boys to the priesthood”. We work in more than 176 countries worldwide. In Africa in more than 35 countries. In the region of Great Lakes we are in Burundi, Rwanda and Uganda.

Salesians of Don Bosco have been present in the Great Lake Region for over 50 years serving young people in education, social and evangelization programs. In Rwanda since 1954, in Burundi since 1962 and in Uganda since 1985. In Uganda we work in Bombo (vocational center and Parish) in Kamuli (vocational center), in Namugongo a center for children with difficulties, and in Gulu a parish, primary and secondary school.
